LUCERNE, Calif. – Authorities on Monday night determined that a suspected explosive device found at a Lucerne home was harmless.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert just before 5 p.m. regarding its response to a possible explosive device in the area of Fourth Avenue and Country Club Drive, asking community members to avoid the area.

Deputies blocked off the entry into Fourth Avenue at Country Club while they waited for the Napa County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad to respond.

What appeared to be a training grenade had been located at a home in the 6200 block of Fourth Avenue. It was placed into a plastic red barrel and kept on the side of the street.

One of the bomb squad’s leaders, Napa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Walsh – who formerly worked for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office – arrived on scene first.

The rest of the squad arrived with the unit’s truck at around 7 p.m., with half the street remaining cordoned off as rain began to steadily fall.

A deputy approached the barrel with X-ray equipment to test the item to make sure it could be safely handled. While the equipment tested the object, the deputy walked over to Walsh’s truck where they appeared to be looking at the testing results on a computer screen.

The deputy walked back, picked up the training grenade and set it on the ground. After some additional checks, the item was confirmed inert.

About 15 minutes later, at 8 p.m., the situation was fully resolved, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported.

“We thank the Napa County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad for their support and appreciate the community’s vigilance and cooperation while deputies worked to safely resolve the situation,” the sheriff’s office said in its last update on the event on Monday night.
