Lake County’s member of the House of Representatives on Tuesday night called out President Donald Trump for his State of the Union address, raising issues with the economy, a new threat of war and claims about election integrity.
“Tonight’s address was an insult to hardworking Americans,” said Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04).
“Since taking office, this president has waged an illegal tariff war that cost the average family $1,700, unleashed rogue immigration agents to terrorize people in our streets, and carried out dangerous military actions for oil without Congressional approval. And when he stood in front of our nation tonight, he lied about all of it,” Thompson said.
“Hardworking families want a real plan to lower costs, they want to feel safe in their communities, and they do not want a new forever war that risks American lives. Instead of solutions, the President lied about the integrity of our elections and threatened to make it harder for citizens to vote. I will keep fighting to hold him accountable in the Congress, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion,” said Thompson.
Thompson was selected by Leader Hakeem Jeffries to serve as the designated survivor for the State of the Union. He watched the speech from a secure, undisclosed location off campus.
Rep. Thompson's guest, Napa veteran and small business owner Bernie Narvaez, attended in person.
