LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Voters in the Mendocino-Lake Community College District will be asked in June to consider approving a bond measure to improve district facilities.

At its Feb. 11 meeting, the college board of trustees unanimously approved a resolution placing the “Mendocino College Career Training/Affordable Education Measure” on the June 2 ballot.

If passed with at least 55% voter approval, Measure A would generate $98 million in bonds, the district reported.

Property owners would pay $24 annually per $100,000 of assessed value. For example, a property assessed at $300,000 would pay $72 a year.

The ballot question will be as follows:

“Mendocino College Career Training/ Affordable Education Measure. To repair classrooms/ labs, leaky roofs, electrical; maintain clean drinking water, remove mold, asbestos, lead paint; to train students for careers in trades, construction, wildland firefighting, healthcare/ nursing/ EMT; construct, acquire, repair facilities/ sites/ equipment; shall Mendocino Lake Community College District’s measure authorizing $98,000,000 in bonds at legal rates be adopted, levying $24 per $100,000 of assessed valuation ($6,100,000 annually, while bonds are outstanding) with public spending disclosure, oversight, audits, no state takeaways?”

The district said Measure A will issue bonds “to raise funds for basic repairs on deteriorating educational facilities and provide updated classroom and lab training facilities for the skilled trade and emergency responder careers on which our communities rely.”

Those potential projects were identified based on a facilities master plan the district said it completed last year. The district said its facilities processes will determine which projects ultimately will be paid for by bond funds.

Mendocino College officials said the district conducted a year and a half of public outreach – via phone, online surveys and in-person meetings – and collected more than 200 responses before bringing the measure to the board of trustees for approval.

The district covers 3,200 square miles and serves nearly 120,000 residents and thousands of businesses, and has campuses in Lakeport, Fort Bragg, Ukiah and Willits.

This is the latest bond measure expected to be considered by some of Lake County’s voters.

At the end of February, the Lakeport Unified School Board – which overlaps the college district – approved placing a $24.5 million bond measure for facility upgrades on the June ballot.
