LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – More than 120 students with disabilities from across Lake County participated in the inaugural Safe Choices, Strong Community – Safety Explorers in Action event, hosted by Lake County Special Education Local Plan Area, or SELPA.

The event, held at two locations in the north and south sides of the county, brought together students from local school districts to connect with first responders in a safe and inclusive environment.

"As educators, our mission is to empower every student with the skills and confidence they need to thrive," said Lake County Superintendent of Schools Brock Falkenberg. “Events like Safety Explorers in Action give our students real-world opportunities to learn, connect, and build trust with those who serve our community. These experiences enhance student well-being and strengthen partnerships between our schools, families, and community, ensuring Lake County students can thrive."

The event was highly beneficial for students, according to feedback from participants and staff. Attendees engaged in hands-on activities, such as learning about first responder gear, exploring emergency equipment, and earning stamps through a passport system.

Students enjoyed interacting with first responders and community members, exploring equipment and uniforms, and participating in interactive stations, such as safety simulations and a sensory station.

“I am proud to see Safety Explorers in Action bring our Safe Choices, Strong Community Initiative to life. This event highlights the power of intentional collaboration between students, educators, and Lake County first responder agencies to build trust, support safe decision-making through exploration, and create lasting outcomes for students with disabilities,” said Nicole Wells, Lake County SELPA executive director. “I look forward to seeing our SELPA vision continue to come to life through future components and events under this initiative's focus.”

Participants included students from several Lake County school districts, along with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, including deputies and Marine Patrol, Cal Fire, Lake County Probation Department, Lake County Search and Rescue, Lakeport Police Department, South Lake County Fire Protection District and the Lakeport Fire Protection District.

Sensory-friendly support – including a quiet space, visual aids and calming tools – was available and widely appreciated, and helped all students participate fully. Staff highlighted the presenters' kindness and understanding, which contributed to a welcoming atmosphere.

For future events, Lake County SELPA is looking to improve event flow, expand hands-on experiences, and offer more resources and take-home materials.

Key outcomes from the event included increased student exposure to safety concepts and safety personnel, fostered positive interactions and relationship building between students and first responders, and supported student engagement through interactive, hands-on learning.
