CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol is leading an investigation into a homicide that was discovered during a Sunday traffic stop in Clearlake.
The CHP’s Clear Lake Area office said that at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, one of its officers conducted a traffic stop on a gray Chevy Suburban on State Route 53 at Dam Road in Clearlake. The stop was due to a vehicle registration violation.
The vehicle pulled over on 18th Avenue, and while speaking with the driver, officers observed fresh blood inside the front of the vehicle, the CHP said.
The officers followed the blood to the vehicle’s rear passenger area, where they found an unresponsive adult. The individual was later confirmed deceased, according to the CHP’s Monday report.
Based on the circumstances, the CHP said it initiated a homicide investigation.
Just after 9 a.m. Sunday, the Clearlake Police Department issued a Nixle alert asking community members to avoid the area of 18th Avenue from Eureka Avenue to Highway 53 due to police activity in the area.
The CHP said its officers requested assistance from CHP’s Northern Division Investigative Services Unit, or ISU, which responded and has assumed primary investigative responsibility.
CHP detectives are working with the Lake County District Attorney’s Office and the Clearlake Police Department as the investigation continues.
The CHP has a lead role in investigating homicides on highways.
Additionally, Clearlake Police Chief Tim Hobbs said the CHP took over the investigation due to it having occurred outside of the city limits.
Authorities have identified all involved parties and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, the CHP said.
The CHP requested that any additional witnesses or individuals with information about this case contact Lt. Dan Fansler at the Clear Lake CHP Office at 707-281-5200.
More information about this case will be provided as it becomes available, the CHP said.
