LAKEPORT, Calif. – Two Clearlake residents arrested last week for a double homicide were back in Lake County Superior Court on Tuesday.
Alex Kenneth Schussolin, 37, and Jasslynn Pearl Critchett, 32, made their latest court appearances Tuesday morning.
The pair are charged with the killings of Sonoma County residents Terry Harris and Desiree Fuentes, which came to light on Easter Sunday following a vehicle stop.
Critchett and Schussolin are each charged with two charges of murder, carjacking, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Authorities said Critchett and Schussolin were driving a gray Chevrolet Suburban with expired registration when they were stopped by California Highway Patrol officers shortly after 8:30 a.m. April 5 just outside of the Clearlake city limits.
The vehicle didn’t belong to them, but was taken from Fuentes and Harris. After seeing a large amount of blood on Critchett and Schussolin and in the vehicle, officers found Harris’ body in the back seat. Later that day, officers found Fuentes’ body dumped down an embankment off the Hopland Grade.
While investigators believe Fuentes and Harris were killed in Sonoma County, the Lake County District Attorney’s Office has taken jurisdiction of the case because their bodies were discovered in Lake County.
Fuentes and Harris are not believed to have had any previous connection with Critchett and Schussolin, and that they met them on the same day the homicides took place.
District Attorney Susan Krones told Lake County News that her chief deputy, Rich Watson, appeared for the prosecution at the Tuesday morning hearings, held before Judge J. David Markham.
Krones said Schussolin appeared in custody for appointment of counsel, entry of plea and bail review. Former District Attorney Don Anderson was appointed as conflict counsel for Schussolin and a plea of not guilty was entered.
Schussolin also entered a general time waiver, meaning, it allows the court to schedule court proceedings outside of statutory deadlines. Anderson requested a one-week continuance to address bail status, Krones said.
She said Schussolin’s case was continued to April 21 for bail review. Bail is currently set at no bail.
Critchett appeared in-custody with her attorney Farris Purviance from the Lake County Public Defender’s Office. Krones said Critchett entered a plea of not guilty and entered a general time waiver. Bail was argued and set at no bail.
Krones said both Critchett and Schussolin have been set for a preliminary hearing on June 11 before Judge Markham.
As for a possible motive, Krones said that hasn’t yet been determined.
“The investigation is continuing so I think closer to prelim we should have more information on a possible motive,” she said.
If convicted, Krones said both Critchett and Schussolin are facing life in prison without parole.
