Friday Night Live Advocacy Day celebrates the power of youth

By Lake County News Reports | Apr 16, 2026

This April, Friday Night Live, or FNL, programs across California are celebrating the work of youth leaders at the forefront of creating positive change in multifaceted communities.

April 24 marks the sixth annual FNL Advocacy Day – a day devoted to spotlighting FNL programs and youth-led campaigns throughout the state.

FNL Month serves as an opportunity to elevate youth voices, highlight the impact of prevention, and celebrate the powerful work happening in communities across California.

Founded in 1984, the FNL program was specifically focused on reducing underage drinking and impaired driving.

Building on the success of its more than 40-year history, FNL has expanded and evolved to also address broader youth-identified issues through youth development principles and practices.

The program is driven by positive youth and adult partnerships that work toward powerful actions to create lasting impacts on the lives of young people and their communities.

Today, FNL programs are implemented in 55 counties in California, and engage over 25,000 youth annually through more than 500 chapters in schools, community centers, local agencies and nonprofit organizations.

FNL reaches a broad spectrum of age groups with youth-led initiatives that focus on refusal skills (grades 4-6), fostering safe environments and developing skills (grades 7-8), as well as community outreach, peer education, social action, and advocacy (grades 9-12 and older).

These local youth-driven FNL programs build resiliency, prevent substance use, promote school connectedness, and support emotional and physical well-being, fostering healthy decisions and stronger community ties for youth leaders and adult allies.

In Clearlake, young people are working on a yearlong cannabis prevention campaign.

Lower Lake High Schools FNL chapter are excited to celebrate FNL Advocacy Day with the community by presenting their research findings to the Clearlake City Council on May 21 at 6 p.m. This day marks an ongoing effort by local youth to educate community members of the dangers of underage cannabis use. FNL recognizes the instrumental partnerships and support that Lake County Office of Education and the Konocti Unified School District have offered the young people in the chapters to have their voices heard.

Now more than ever, is the time to invest in the leaders of today and tomorrow. Together, youth and adult partners in FNL will continue to build healthier communities for all.
