Lucerne, Upper Lake schools plan heightened security after reported threat

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Two Lake County school districts reported Monday evening that they will have a heightened law enforcement presence on their campuses on Tuesday in response to a threat.

On Monday evening, Lucerne Elementary School and the Upper Lake Unified School District posted on their Facebook pages about the threat of violence on their campuses.

While both school districts have concluded that the threat isn’t credible, they are nonetheless planning to scale up security for school on Tuesday.

The threat was made on Monday, which was the 27th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre in which 13 students and one teacher were fatally shot.

“We want to inform you that we were made aware today of a potential threat of violence on our campus for tomorrow,” Lucerne Elementary Superintendent/Principal Megan Grant wrote. “We take all reports of this nature very seriously and began an immediate investigation. We have been in contact with local law enforcement and probation authorities as part of this process.

“At this time, the information gathered indicates that the threat is not considered credible. However, student and staff safety is our highest priority,” Grant said.

She added that, “out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased law enforcement presence on campus” on Tuesday.

“We understand that situations like this can be concerning. Please know that we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and will continue to monitor the situation closely, Grant said.

She also encouraged parents to contact the school as soon as possible if they or their children have any information that could assist in the investigation.

A letter posted on the Upper Lake Unified School District Facebook page signed by Tenderly Logan, the assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services – and the incoming superintendent – said the district administration was alerted on Monday morning “to a general social media comment on TikTok regarding a potential school shooting.”

Logan added, “It is important to note that the statement did not name Upper Lake High School.”

In alignment with the district’s School Safety Plan and Standard Response Protocol, Logan said the district “took immediate action to ensure the security of our campus.”

That included contacting the Probation Department to investigate the source and credibility of the threat. She said Probation’s initial review determined the threat to not be credible.

“Despite the non-credible status, the Probation Department promptly notified the Sheriff’s Office to conduct a full, independent investigation as an added layer of safety,” Logan said.

She said the district will have additional support from the sheriff’s office and Probation Department on campus on Tuesday.

On the Upper Lake Facebook page, a picture was posted by a community member of a spray painted threat naming several children on the side of a building in Lucerne. It was not immediately clear where, exactly, the threat was posted. Neither school district referenced the spray painted threat in their messages to families and the community.

Several parents posted on the Upper Lake page that they are planning to keep their children home from school on Tuesday.
