LAKEPORT, Calif. – A proposal for the county to take over the operation of the Gibson Museum in Middletown will go to the Board of Supervisors this week.
The board will meet beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the board chambers on the first floor of the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport.
The meeting can be watched live on Channel 8 and online at http://www.co.lake.ca.us/Government/Boards/Board_of_Supervisors/calendar.htm . Accompanying board documents, the agenda and archived board meeting videos also are available at that link.
In an untimed item, Public Services Director Lars Ewing will go to the board with a proposal for the county to operate the C. Gibson Museum and Culture Center at 21256 Washington St. in Middletown.
The museum opened in 2013 as the result of an effort led by local volunteers.
“Over the years the volunteers of the Gibson board have shown themselves to be a community-
minded group who are extremely successful at raising funds for their museum,” Ewing wrote in his report to the board. “However, from the very beginning they have struggled to keep regular open hours for the museum and, lacking professional training, have had problems adequately recording and storing their growing collection of south Lake County history. With the loss of key volunteer docents, the challenge of operating a museum and raising money for the museum itself are becoming too much. The board of the Friends of Gibson fears they will have to close shop.”
Ewing said the Public Services Museum Division wants to add the Gibson Museum to the facilities it already manages – the Courthouse Museum and the Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum – with the Friends of the Gibson Museum as a partnering nonprofit.
He said it is anticipated to cost $16,000 annually for the county to take on running the Gibson Museum.
In other untimed items, the board will consider continuing local emergency declarations due to the Rocky, Jerusalem, Valley and Clayton fires.
The full agenda follows.
