Howland: Harry offers ideas, experience and energy

I have been online looking at some videos of various candidates.

I came upon an interview with Don Anderson in 2014. He was asked who he would be supporting for sheriff in the upcoming election. Mr. Anderson began describing one of the candidates – “unfortunately, he’s my age and he’s spent a lot of time in law enforcement … I’m not saying it’s a bad thing … I think the sheriff’s office needs a lot of young ideas, a lot of energy and it’s going to need somebody who wants to be there for a long time.”

Well, it seems that Mr. Anderson was correct back then. Sheriff Brian Martin brought all those attributes and more to his position as Lake County sheriff and is now one of the most admired elected officials in the county.

Don’t you think this is good advice for the Nov. 6 Lake County Superior Court judge race?

Shanda Harry is the candidate who brings a lot of young ideas, has the experience and brings a lot of energy to the position. And she's someone who wants to be there for a long time!

Please join me in voting for Shanda Harry for Superior Court judge.

Urquiza: Thanks for supporting Lakeport Senior Center

We want to acknowledge Shari Koch and her Lake Line Dancers for supporting our center every Tuesday and Thursday.

Shari recently celebrated 15 years of line dancing at the center where some of her longtime students came to partake in her celebration.

Shari donated all her proceeds to our Meal on Wheels program which helps all of our homebound seniors receive a hot meal throughout the week and freshly prepared frozen meals for the weekend.

She not only brings a fun-filled low impact exercise class to our center for seniors to enjoy but she also helps facilitate our monthly newsletter plus administrates all of our paid advertisers as well.

On behalf of Jonathan Crooks, myself, our board of directors and the entire senior center we want to say thank you, Shari, you are a wonderful person who really cares about our center and puts forth a great deal of volunteer time to help make it a success!

Lani Urquiza is co-director of the Lakeport Senior Center. She lives in Lucerne, Calif.

Koehn: Harry has broad legal experience

If Don Anderson is elected as a Superior Court judge in Lake County, he will have to recuse himself from hearing all criminal cases for a minimum of two years due to his eight-year tenure as Lake County’s district attorney. Those are the rules.

He continues to stress his experience in criminal justice, but he will not be using that experience in the near future. This will make our Lake County courts, that are already overburdened with cases, even less efficient.

I suggest voting for Shanda Harry on Nov. 6.

She has broad experience in criminal, governmental, tribal and civil law and extensive practice at superior and appellate court levels.

Her prior work as Lake County’s deputy county counsel will only require her recusal from a handful of cases.

Markham: Response to Anderson’s comments about sheriff’s office

I am writing this letter in response to a statement made by judicial candidate Don Anderson at the Middletown Area Town Hall debate on Oct. 11.

Anderson stated that he joined the Lake County Sheriff’ Department at a young age.

Anderson said “that in the early years working in the sheriff’s office he was kind of a rebel.”

He further stated that, “Back then, Middletown was a place nobody wanted to be in. Whenever I did something to upset my administrator, I was sent to Middletown as a punishment.”

It was reported that he joked that every time his superiors would ask him how things were going, he would ask if he could come home to Lakeport.

In all my years with the sheriff’s department, 36, retiring as a chief deputy, I never knew the department to use beat assignments as a form of discipline.

I was the patrol commander for a number of years. Discipline procedures by the department utilized a standard form of law enforcement discipline ranging from oral reprimands to
Termination.

Such a practice as putting an officer in a specific area for discipline would certainly lead to poor performance by the assigned officer.

I am upset that Mr. Anderson would characterize the sheriff’s office as using a location in our county as a discipline measure.

The department philosophy was and still is that all citizens of Lake County deserve to be respected and protected, irregardless of where they live.
