LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Commission invites members of the public to attend a public forum which is held on the third Thursday of every month.

The forums begin at 12:15 p.m. on the third floor, conference room C, in the Lake County Courthouse, located at 255 N. Forbes St. in Lakeport.

There currently are vacancies on the board that the commission would like to fill.

In addition to adults, youths between the ages of 14-21 are encouraged to attend and inquire as to a commission position.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Library Literacy Program is having a training for volunteer tutors Nov. 10, 17 and 24.

The trainings will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lakeport Library, 1425 N. High St.

Participants will learn useful techniques for teaching adults to read and practice the techniques with a partner.

Upon completion of the training, tutors will be matched with adult learners in a variety of settings around the county.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Friends of the Library group will hold its semiannual book sale Saturday, Nov. 1.

The sale will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lakeport Library, 1425 N. High St.

Members in good standing will be allowed in at 9 a.m.

All hardback and trade paperback books will be $1, children's books 50 cents each, regular-size paper backs six for $1, and boxed sets of books and coffee table books as marked. 

Book bags will be on sale for $15 each and book bags filled with as many books as they will hold will be $20 each.

They also will have everyone's favorite Chico bags for sale.

Tickets for a drawing for a Kindle Fire are still available to purchase at the library for $15 each or two for $25.

The drawing will be on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. following the book sale.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 88 of Lake County will meet a week later in October.

This month's meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, as the group participated in the Heroes of Health & Safety Fair on Oct. 18 at the fairgrounds in Lakeport.  

The Flotilla meets at the Konocti Bay Sailing Club building, located at Braito's Marina at the end of the Buckingham Peninsula in Kelseyville.

The meeting is open to anyone 17 years or older who would be interested in joining this active group.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Nonprofit leaders from Lake and Mendocino counties are invited to register for a one-day workshop at the Mendocino College Lake Center.

The session will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Nonprofit Organization 101” will be led by Terry Fries, a member of the Mendocino College faculty, a Lake County resident and a consultant to more than 80 not-for-profit organizations and professional associations that have raised more than $200 million dollars with his coaching.

The group will discuss the key responsibilities of volunteer board members, how to move from over-dependence on government grants, and how to embrace the growing opportunities for consolidation with other organizations to reduce cost and increase program strength.

Topics also will include key areas in governance and fund raising for nonprofit organizations.

This is an affordable and rare opportunity to bring your employees and board members together to discuss new initiatives for your nonprofit.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – In honor of Veterans Day, the Sons of Norway Vikings of Lake Lodge No. 6-166 will host a presentation on the 99th Infantry Battalion – otherwise known as “The Viking Battalion” – on Sunday, Nov. 9.

The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. at Galilee Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 8860 Soda Bay Road in Kelseyville.

Bill Hoffland of the 99th Infantry Battalion WWII Educational Foundation in San Francisco will give the presentation.

Hoffland will bring his mini-museum of memorabilia and uniforms as well as DVDs to sell.

There also will be a buffet-style lunch of Scandinavian-style dishes to enjoy.

The suggested donation is $5 per person.
