LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Soper-Reese Community Theatre’s Classic Movie Series presents “Vertigo” on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

This film will be shown at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre, 275 St. Main St. in Lakeport, with a $5 suggested donation.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the film starting at 6 p.m.

“Vertigo” is a 1958 Alfred Hitchcock thriller starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak.

Stewart stars as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a former police detective forced to retire due to acrophobia.

He begins to investigate the strange activities of Madeleine Elster, the wife of an old friend, becoming obsessed with her in the process.

The film, shot in San Francisco, is considered to be one of the defining works of Hitchcock’s career.

The Classic Movie Series runs on the second Tuesday of every month.  

The December movie, to be shown Dec. 11, will be “Pocket Full of Miracles.”

The Soper-Reese Community Theatre is a restored, historic, performing arts venue established in 1949 and seating 300 patrons.

Run by an all-volunteer organization, the theater operates under the guidance of the nonprofit Lake County Arts Council.

The Soper-Reese brings dance, music, plays and poetry to all members of the Lake County community and to visiting tourists.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – At the Oct. 18 meeting of the Konocti Lioness Club the topic of the guest speakers was literacy programs in Lake County.  

Lake County Superintendent of Schools Wally Holbrook of the Lake County Office of Education made a presentation concerning the Lake County Literacy Task Force (LCLTF) and its vision that everyone in the county – young, adults and elders – be able to read.

Holbrook would like Lake County to be known as the “county that reads.”  

Richard Smith spoke about the Kelseyville Sunrise Rotary Club Reading Program for K-5 grades at local elementary schools now in its sixth year.  

There is a need for volunteer readers and welcomed the partnering with the Lioness Club to become readers.    

Lonny Rittler from the Lake County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) informed the audience about adult literacy and how the program focuses on training volunteer tutors.  

LCLC has a Family Literacy program that offers free one-on-one tutoring for students  then encourages the students to read to their parents who in turn will read to their child thus becoming readers themselves.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Middletown Area Town Hall (MATH) will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8.

The meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m. at Calpine's Cartwright Geothermal Visitors Center, 15500 Central Park Road.

On the agenda, under unfinished business, MATH Director Martha Webster will give a report on the Middletown Square Park development and Director Joe Sullivan will give a report on a Caltrans grant.

Under new business, Karen Turcotte will give a presentation on the future use of the existing Middletown Library, a request to Lake County Animal Care and Control for an ordinance to prohibit
leaving dogs in cars on hot days.

There also will be nominations for two seats – for Middletown proper and at-large – on the MATH Board. Current nominations include Joann Gavazza and Fletcher Thornton.

There also will be discussion and possible action regarding the Jesus Christ Fellowship Worship Center on Highway 175 and joint meetings with Middletown Merchants Association and other community
groups.

Other business includes MATH goals for 2013 and board and committee reports, including a request to the county to ban smoking in Middletown Square Park and a Middletown Library patron wall MATH member contribution.

The public is invited to attend.

MATH meetings are subject to videotaping. Meeting proceedings may be available for viewing on public access television and/or the Internet.

MATH – established by resolution of the Lake County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 12, 2006 – is a municipal advisory council serving the residents of Anderson Springs, Cobb, Coyote Valley (including Hidden Valley Lake), Long Valley and Middletown.

The group’s current board of directors include Chairman Joe Sullivan, Vice Chair Claude Brown, Secretary Ken Gonzales and members Tom Darms and Martha Webster.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Democratic Club will hold its regular meeting at noon on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Rose Room of the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center.

Lake County Democratic Club meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month at noon in the Rose Room of the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center.
