UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Redwood Empire Civil War Roundtable will meet Monday, Nov. 5, starting at 6:15 p.m. at the Tallman Hotel in Upper Lake.

Mark Cooper will do a presentation on Civil War blockade running, the very dangerous but highly profitable business of maintaining trade to Southern ports through the Union blockade.

Cooper, who also is a well-known dentist in Clearlake, is an amateur historian who has studied and visited many Civil War-era locations, and brings a very unique perspective to the group.

There will also be a review of the events of November, 1862, as the group has been following the war month by month in recognition of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Children’s Museum of Art and Science (CMAS) and the Yuba College Culinary Arts Program will be presenting “Tastes Around the World,”  featuring international street food, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

This event will be held at the new Aromas Café, Building B, on the Yuba campus. Music by Ear Reverence, a local a cappella group, and international-themed raffle baskets also will be a part of the evening.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will go to supporting the seventh annual CMAS Art and Science Camp slated for Saturday, May 4, 2013. The camp will take place at the Taylor Observatory and the Ely Stage Stop.

This year the Redbud Audubon Society is sponsoring a one hour raptor show as part of the camp. Students will be able to see rescued hawks, owls and other raptors up close and ask questions about these fascinating hunters.

CMAS also will use funds from this event to further develop their Lego Robotics Program.

Last year in a pilot program with the Konocti Unified School District, CMAS offered a two-hour hands-on robot workshop for each of the district’s K-8 schools.

More than 125 students in grades third through sixth attended. In addition, throughout the year, teachers at Lower Lake Elementary School were able to schedule their classes for robot sessions in the school library.

This year CMAS is working with the Riviera School in Kelseyville to bring robot experiences to their students. The CMAS program goal is to be able to work with all schools throughout the county.

CMAS is a volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to providing art and science experiences for the youth of Lake County. All CMAS events are free to all participants.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Lakeport Senior Activity Center is looking for a volunteer Meals on Wheels delivery driver for the Buckingham area.  

The volunteer must have an insured and reliable vehicle that is good on gas.  

Round trip for the deliveries is approximately 45 miles, and gas is reimbursed at $20 per day.  

Route is Monday through Friday and typically goes from packing at 10 a.m. and is completed in two hours.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The next HazMobile event will be held Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at Highlands Senior Service/Community Center, 3245 Bowers Ave, Clearlake.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Households can bring up to 15 gallons of toxic items free of charge. Fees will be charged for amounts over 15 gallons.

Items that are accepted include paint, solvents, fuels, five-gallon propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, fluorescent light tubes (up to 60 linear feet) and other toxic materials that cannot be put in the trash.

Items that cannot be accepted include televisions, computer monitors, ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials or infectious wastes.

HazMobile services are provided to residential households by the Integrated Waste Management Division of the Lake County Public Services Department and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

Businesses also are welcome to use this convenient service to properly dispose of hazardous waste and protect our environment, however, businesses must pay for this taxpayer-funded service and first make an appointment.

Free recycling options for residents and businesses:

• Recycled paint is available to both residents and businesses at Lake County Waste Solutions on first-come, first-served basis in five gallon containers. Colors include tan, brown, gray, and pink.
• Used cooking oil can be dropped-off by businesses and residents, which will be recycled into BioDiesel by Yokayo BioFuels. Drop-off at Lake County Waste Solutions, South Lake Refuse & Recycling Center, and the Northshore Fire Protection District station at 6257 Seventh Ave. in Lucerne.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Lake County Republican Women, Federated (LCRWF) will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Riviera Hills Restaurant, 10200 Fairway Drive, Kelseyville.

The speakers for the meeting will be Patrick Ridgel, Lake County Republican Central Committee chairman, and Maria Barnes, 2012 president for LCRWF.

Ridgel’s topic will be “Republican business in Lake County” and Barnes will speak on the history of the women’s vote.

The installation of the 2013 officers will take place at this meeting, the closing meeting of 2012.

Officers for 2013 will be Marcia Chauvin as president, Meredith Lahmann as vice president, Cathy Barr-Vogel as secretary and Sherrye Schwarz as treasurer.

Lahmann, Americanism chairperson, will report on the fall book donation project to help Lake County high schools.

Books have been donated through the organization so that each county high school will be receiving additional books for their library.

The books cover a wide range of US political and historical subjects. Lahmann’s first stop to present books was at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport where she met with librarian Sue Jensen.

Membership is open to all registered Republican women and meetings are open to the general public.

Light refreshments will be served at the Nov. 10 meeting.
