The dance will be held at the church, located at Church and Third streets.

There will be two sessions; one, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with photos beginning at 4:30 p.m.; and the second from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., with photos starting at 7:30 p.m.

The dance is open to all Lake County girls, ages 3 to 18.

Although it's a father-daughter event, any male chaperone appropriate for the girl is encouraged.

This is a community service event to provide a positive experience for Lake County girls.

As part of the experience, each girl receives a long stem red carnation, a 5 by 7 inch picture of herself and her date, two hours of dancing, a chance to win raffle prizes, and cookies and punch.

Tickets are $20 and $5 for each extra daughter for chaperones with more than one “date.”

There are 75 tickets for each session, with the first session having sold out for the past four years.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the center, located at 872 Lakeport Blvd., Lakeport.

Those age 21 and over can enjoy the big game on three of the largest screens in Lake County inside the sports theater.

There will be hot dogs and domestic draft beers for $3, an all-you-can-eat ribs buffet that costs $9 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under. There also will be raffles and a free Super Bowl team pool.

For the children there will be unlimited bowling, lazer tag and dodge ball for $20 all day long.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) announced that there were 81 on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States as a result of incidents that occurred in 2011.

This represents an almost 7 percent decrease from the 87 fatalities reported for 2010.

The 81 fatalities occurred in 33 states, one U.S. territory, and one overseas U.S. military facility.

Texas experienced the highest number of fatalities, with seven.

North Carolina experienced six firefighter deaths and was the only other state with five or more firefighter fatalities.

“In 2004 at the initial Life Safety Summit, a number of fire service leaders did not believe we would complete a calendar year with less than 100 firefighter on-duty deaths,” U.S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell said. "We broke through that perceived barrier in 2009, 2010, and now in 2011! We salute and congratulate our fire service family and pledge to continue working closely with the entire fire service community and its partners to maintain and even accelerate this downward trend in on-duty firefighter deaths.”

Heart attacks were responsible for the deaths of 48 firefighters (59%) in 2011, nearly the same proportion of firefighter deaths from heart attack or stroke (60%) in 2010.

Ten on-duty firefighters died in association with wildland fires, the lowest number of annual firefighter deaths associated with wildland fires since 1996.

Fifty-four percent of all firefighter fatalities occurred while performing emergency duties.

Three firefighters were killed in vehicle collisions.

2011 firefighter fatality statistics are provisional and may change as the USFA contacts State Fire Marshals to verify the names of firefighters reported to have died on duty during 2011.

The final number of firefighter fatalities will be reported in USFA's annual firefighter fatality report, expected to be available by July.

LUCERNE, Calif. – As we begin to clean our yard debris and get plants ready for winter cold, we often forget about our gardening tools.

Many tools are left out, hoses have holes, and others items need maintenance after a long spring, summer and fall of gardening.

At the North Lake Garden Club's meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24, Don Smith will make a presentation on garden tool maintenance.

The meeting will begin with sharing plants and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. at Lucerne Community Church, 5870 E. Highway 20. The workshop will follow.

You are welcome to join the club for an informative workshop that will teach you how to take care and fix garden tools.

Bring a hose with holes or tool and learn to fix it yourself. This is a great way to start the new year right.

The club is a member of California Garden Clubs Inc, National Garden Clubs Inc. and Mendo-Lake District, with meetings held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, September through May.

Swim practice runs 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Swimmers have the option of swimming as many days per week as they choose, with rates for the two-month session ranging from $60 for one day per week to $210 for four days per week.

A second spring session takes place April 2 through May 31.

A one-hour adult swim is open to those aged 20 and older for a reduced rate and takes place 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Spring session is not appropriate for beginners as practice occurs in deep water.

To register, come to the Westshore Pool located at Clear Lake High School during any swim practice and paperwork will be available.
