Redwood Credit Union to match donations up to $12,000 for Mendocino College Student Emergency Fund

Details
Written by: MENDOCINO COLLEGE FOUNDATION
Published: 26 August 2022
NORTH COAST, Calif. — The Fall 2022 semester is underway at Mendocino College, and students are getting back on track with education and career prep after an unpredictable few years.

With inflation making prices for food, gas, books and living expenses higher, some students will be struggling to make ends meet.

The Student Emergency Fund is one way to help them worry less and study more. Eligible students are able to receive up to $500 in a one-time emergency grant to stay on track.

Thanks to a generous matching gift from Redwood Credit Union, donors to the Mendocino College Student Emergency Fundraiser campaign can double their donation.

With the generous help of the community, the foundation hopes to turn $12,000 into $24,000 in emergency aid for students in Ukiah, Lakeport, Willits and Fort Bragg.

In a recent survey, three out of five students reported at least one basic needs insecurity such as food or housing.

The Mendocino College Foundation reported that it knows from hearing directly from students that sometimes one relatively small crisis — a brokedown car, an unexpected medical bill, a change in housing circumstances — can derail the best laid plans. And with the cost of everything going up, students have less wiggle room to address these setbacks, so minor things can become major ones.

Any contribution made to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by Redwood Credit Union.

Your donation could mean the difference between a student dropping out or continuing on their path toward their certificate or degree.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. — This year’s recipients of the J. Fletcher and Anne Elliott Educational Scholarship awarded last month at Kelseyville High School are seniors Fermin Mendoza and Victor Sepulveda.

This year’s award is $10,000 to each recipient.

Mendoza and Sepulveda both have outstanding academic and athletic high school careers.

Both ranked high in their class. And both had exemplary athletic success through their high school years with Mendoza being a soccer fanatic, and Sepulveda playing soccer, football and tennis.

Mendoza is going to Mendocino Community College and then to Sonoma State with a goal to receive a B.S. in biochemistry while pursuing a professional soccer career.

Sepulveda is going to California Polytechnic State University, majoring in biology and pursuing a career in the medical field.

“This scholarship will help my family financially and relieve the stress of working and studying at the same time,” Mendoza said.

“This takes a big burden off my shoulders, and hopefully I will be able to study more,” Sepulveda said.

This scholarship foundation was originally established by the late Anne Elliott with the help of Rian Sommerfield at Nestegg Investment Consulting and is expected to fund future scholarships for many years to come in memory of her husband J. Fletcher.
