Police K9 helps apprehend man following domestic disturbance

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A Clearlake man who was allegedly aggressive toward his wife and police officers was apprehended on Wednesday night with the help of a police K9.
After 54-year-old Kevin Frank Zeier refused to come out from a hiding place under a house, K9 Officer Dex was deployed and helped officers take Zeier into custody, according to Sgt. Martin Snyder of the Clearlake Police Department.
At 8:29 p.m. Wednesday Clearlake Police officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance regarding a male being aggressive towards his wife at a residence located at the 14000 block of Ballpark Avenue, Snyder said.
Two officers responded to the residence, and when they arrived on scene they located a male sitting in a running vehicle in the driveway of the residence, Snyder said.
The officers attempted to contact the solo occupant of the vehicle but the male – later identified as Zeier – refused to respond to their questions, Snyder said. At that time a female exited the residence and identified Zeier as the responsible party.
One of the officers approached the female to obtain further information. At that point, Zeier exited the vehicle and started approaching one of the officers – who was standing near the rear of the patrol vehicle – in an aggressive manner, according to Snyder.
Snyder said Zeier charged the officer then turned approximately three to five yards from the officer and fled on foot away from the area, Snyder said.
Officers gave chase, giving Zeier several commands to stop, but he ignored the commands and continued running through several properties and over fences, Snyder said.
Additional officers responded to the area and established a perimeter around the area where Zeier was last seen. Snyder said Officer Michael Carpenter and his K9 partner Dex also arrived and began a search of the area.
Snyder said Zeier was located under a house on Blue Jay Avenue. He was given numerous commands to exit from under the residence but he ignored the commands, and also refused to show his hands – which were concealed – to officers.
Officer Carpenter deployed Dex and Zeier – who resisted the K9 – was bitten on the groin and arm before officers removed him from under the residence and took him into custody without further incident, Snyder said.
Paramedics with the Lake County Fire Protection District responded to the scene and rendered medical aid to Zeier, who subsequently was transported to St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake for medical treatment, Snyder said.
After being medically cleared for incarceration, Zeier was booked into the Lake County Jail for obstructing and delaying a peace officers, with bail set at $5,000. He remained in custody on Thursday afternoon.
